TIPS TO AVOID MOVING SCAMS

By Makespace

In this economy, cost drives many of our key decisions, and selecting a Mover is no different.  But, buyers beware!  It’s no secret that the moving industry has become a hot bed of activity for scams, featured in media outlets, warning consumers about the perils of hiring a mover.  These days it’s easy for almost anyone to create a legitimate lookingweb-site and claim to be a mover but the reality is they may not even own a truck.

The checklist below has been designed to help you weed out any potential scams when considering who will move your most precious belongings.  Whether it’s your college dorm furniture, family heirlooms, or your child’s teddy bear trust your items to a Professional Mover.

If moving Locally:

  • Ensure that the Moving Company has a verifiable, physical location or office that you can visit during regular business hours.
  • Verify the company has an active license to perform moving services within your state and has valid, current insurance. CA Public Utilities Commision
  • Verify the company’s rating with the Better Business Bureau
  • Verify the company is a member of your states Moving and Storage Association and/or theAmerican Moving and Storage Association and has earned a ProMover designation.
  • Review online feedback from other consumers.
  • Carefully review contracts for “hidden or non-customary “ fees (i.e. charging for moving pads used to wrap furniture and the tape to secure the moving pads, charging for shrink wrap to protect furniture items.)
  • Ensure the company is willing to give you a free in home estimate.
  • Ask about background checks and Mover training programs.

If moving Out of State:

  • Beware of internet only estimates! Ensure the company is willing to give you a free in home estimate.
  • Ensure that the Moving Company has a verifiable, physical location or office that you can visit during regular business hours.
  • Verify the company has an active license to perform moving services within your state and has up to date insurance. CA Public Utilities Commision
  • Verify the company has valid D.O.T. authority to cross state lines. This may be under the name of the Van Line if your moving company is an agent for a Van Line and operating under their authority (i.e. Mayflower, Fenton, MO)
  • Verify the company’s rating with the Better Business Bureau
  • Verify the company is a member of the American Moving and Storage Association and has earned a ProMover designation.
  • Review online feedback from other consumers.
  • Carefully review contracts for “hidden or non-customary “ fees (i.e. charging for moving pads used to wrap furniture and the tape to secure the moving pads, charging for shrink wrap to protect furniture items.) NOTE: Charges for “packing” materials used are customary.
  • Educate yourself about how you will be charged if the actual weight exceeds of your shipment exceeds your estimated weight, or if you decide to add more items to your move.  Will you receive a credit if the weight goes under?
  • Ask about background checks and Mover training programs.
